BACOLOD CITY – Goals from Shiela Bangkil and Famela Mabagal propelled Xavier University (XU) to a 2-0 win against Foundation University of Dumaguete City (FU) in an otherwise disappointing Day 2 campaign by the Crusaders during the Sandugo UniGames 2012. Bangkil drew first blood in their game during the 30th minute, while Mabagal padded on to the Crusaders’ lead during the 59th. XU held off repeated attacks by FU throughout the second half to preserve the advantage.

Tomorrow, the Crusaders face the University of the Philippines – Diliman, winners of a 3-1 game against De La Salle University – Manila.

Spikers Outlasted

Meanwhile in men’s volleyball, the Crusaders got swept in three sets by Ateneo de Manila University. XU started out flat in the first set, 25-14. XU was able to regroup in the second, getting even with ADMU to 22-all before conceding the last three points. They were unable to recover in the final period as ADMU took charge, 25-12.

In the nightcap, XU raised its game against Baguio City’s St. Louis University (SLU), but also bowed in three straight sets. The Crusaders kept up with SLU in the first period before allowing the last five points to let SLU claim the set, 25-20. XU lost the following set as well, 25-23, but not before making a furious comeback that fell agonizingly short. Facing a 2-0 deficit, XU started fast in the third set before SLU dominated the rest of the way, 25-14.

Rookies’ Spikes

Crusader volleybelles also had a tough take-off, succumbing to a 0-2 win-loss record after Day 2. The 2012 COSAA champs fell victims to the Lyceum of the Philippines University (LPU) in their first outing where they were overwhelmed by the Shakey’s V-League contenders three sets to none. XU played two straight forgettable sets, 3-25 and 12-25, before getting on track at the third, starting with a 6-2 cushion. Midway through the set, XU held on to a 15-13 deficit before the opponents orchestrated a game-clinching 12-point barrage, 15-25, handing them their first defeat. Later, the young XU team – which featured only four veterans – squared off against the UniGames 2011 third placers Central Philippine University (CPU). The Crusaders orchestrated better plays against their second foes, but were still clobbered in three straight sets. Unforced errors rained the lady netters all game long, handing their opponents a win with set scores 13-25, 11-25, and 14-25.

Table Lackluster

XU’s table tennis men featured disappointing performances against tournament favorites in their first and second battles of Day 2, kneeling down before De La Salle University – Manila and John B. Lacson Foundation Maritime University of Iloilo City, both in three straight. C
