Students, teachers, orgs given recognition in Magis Awards

The Magis Awards 2011 was held at the XU Covered Courts on March 22 to give recognition to exceptional students, faculty, organizations and campus-based projects.

Sanustraba and Pauline Emepynado took the stage for an opening number: a live performance of “Atenista Ako” and a rap performance by Jep Po. After a short video presentation, outgoing President Fr. Jett Ramon Villarin, SJ, formally welcomed everyone to the event.

Before presenting the first set of awards, the Review and Recognition Committee (RRC) members were introduced. The first set of awards were as follows: the Fr. Francisco Demetrio, SJ Award for Campus-Based Project was garnered by the Academic Varsity by the XU Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (XU JPIA); and the Fr. Francisco Demetrio, SJ Award for Community-Based Project went to Sharing the Light: A Crusade to Bring Public High School Libraries Back to Life by partner organizations STREAMS-Pathways to Higher Education and The Crusader Publication.

                                                                                                                   

 

The second set of awards were as follows: the Magis Award for Extra-Curricular Organization was bagged by the Soundtable; the Magis Award for Co-Curricular Organization went to the Xavier University Psychology Society (XUPS); and the Magis Award for Outstanding College Council was won by the College of Nursing Students (CONUS).

Before proceeding to the third set, the Elements Crew wowed the crowd with a dance performance. This was followed by the Tribute to the Teachers by the Central Student Government, upon which outgoing CSG President Ernesto B. Neri, assisted by Kevin Isagani Salazar, presented a plaque of appreciation for all the teachers. The plaque was received by Academic Vice-President Lina G. Kwong, in behalf of all the teachers.

The third set of awards consisted of the Exemplar Awards for students and organizations who have brought pride to the University by participating in regional, national, and international events. The awards were given by category. For the national level, the awardees were Ridwan N. Landasan, Harold Floren, Malcolm C. Flores, Mario L. Tero II, Kevin Isagani Salazar, Joanne Vivien Belderol, Shola Mae Rose G. Zamayla, Entrepreneurs Responding Through Social Service, Little Schoolhouse and XU Rodeo.

In the regional level, the awardees were TJ Ray Raagas, Bernard Naval, Karl Wayne Abregana, Sheila Mae Dacer, Marie Eugenie Palasan, Carl Richard Copino, Jinus Maagad, Rowell Cortes, Rogelio Panunce II, The Crusader Publication, and Junior Philippine Institute of Accountants (JPIA). In the international level, the awardee was Ridwan N. Landasan.

Not only students and organizations were acknowledged, but also the faculty and staff. In line with this, the Award for Outstanding Moderator was given to Ms. Edralin Manla from the Teachers Guild and the Award for a School Administrator was awarded to Dr. Amparo Vedua-Dinagsao.

Consequently, The Crusader Publication was given a plaque and tribute for 75 years of unrelenting student expression in service of truth and freedom, making the publication the oldest student organization in the University. Irie rendered a band performance of the song “Posible” afterwards.

The fourth and final set of awards were the Dux Gregis Award (Leader of the Flock) was given to Dr. Amparo Vedua-Dinagsao and Mr. Ridwan Landasan, and the Ad Majorem dei Gloriam (AMDG) Award for Outstanding Student Leader went to Ernesto B. Neri.

Subsequently, to honor outgoing University President Fr. Jose Ramon T. Villarin, SJ and his many accomplishments for the University, the Magis Awards committee prepared video compilation of snapshots taken with him and certain students and members of the faculty. Villarin, in response, gave a speech on strength, gratitude, and generosity.

The finale performance closed the program with inspirational songs by Daryl Bacolcol, John Rey Bajuyo, Pauline Empeynado, Kisha Manla, Daryl Obelidon, Sheena Marie Pagtalunan and Adrian Villaroya. The lively hosts for the program were Titus John Monterde, Maxine Monasterio, George Alexander Goking, Adeva Jane Esparago and Maria Teresa Angela Santos. The theme for the night was glam-rock. C
